Today on Meditating the Word, Naomi loses her husband and sons, Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem, Ruth meets Boaz in the Grain Field, Ruth goes to Boaz at the threshing floor, Boaz marries Ruth, Naomi gains a son - the grandfather of King David.
This is Day 97. Today we are reading the Book of Ruth----
Father God, I get chills when I read the account of Ruth and her faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Although she was from Moab, a gentile, her near kinsman redeemed her and gave her a place among your covenant people and her great grandson was King David, a man after your own heart. What a beautiful example of redemption. In the same way, Jesus redeemed me, though I was a gentile, and brought me into covenant relationship with you. Thank you, Father, for your mercy, your love and your faithfulness. Amen.

Father God, those were rough times. It's very hard to read about the wickedness that existed, even among your chosen people. Yet, you were faithful to your covenant with Israel, and didn't let the tribe of Benjamin be totally destroyed. Help us to be faithful to your Word, Father. And to always remember that there are very real consequences for sin. But thank you that even though we may have consequences to deal with in the natural, the wages of sin have been paid by Jesus' death on the cross, and we have eternal life in him. Thank you, Father, for your mercy and your faithfulness. Amen.

Father God, again, your word is sometimes difficult for us to read. But we will be faithful and trust that you will give us revelation on the difficult passages so we can take the lessons we need to learn and apply them to our lives. We know from scriptures we have already read, that you take vows seriously, and in the account of Japhthah, the importance of not making rash vows is driven home. His daughter, his only child, was sacrificed because of his rash oath. And we see her obedience to her father... even unto death. Just as Jesus was obedient to you unto death on the cross. May we also be obedient, Father. Amen.

Father God, sometimes we read the accounts in the Old Testament of when your Spirit came upon men and enabled them to do great and miraculous things, and we envy them. We forget, that we have the gift of Holy Spirit with us 24/7, and that we are the body of Christ in the earth. Jesus said that we would do even greater things than what he did when he walked on the earth. Help us, Father, to live in your truth, to listen when Holy Spirit gives us direction, and to boldly do the works of Christ. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray,  Amen.

Father God, We see how easy it is to be led astray. Even Gideon, that might man of valor, took the golden earrings and made an ephod which became an idol to him, his household, and the people of the city. You are our strength, our fortress and our provider. Thank you for the lessons of scripture that you had penned for our instruction. Help us to not be led astray and to put our faith and trust in anything but you, Father.  Amen.

Father God, thank you for the account of Gideon. He saw himself as unworthy, from the smallest tribe, and the poorest of his family. He didn't have any outward appearance of being someone special. But you saw him as a mighty man of valor. You use the weak to conquer the mighty, and the lowly to bring down the proud. Help us to see ourselves as you see us, Father. As might men and women of God. Not in numbers or in our own strength, but in your strength.  Amen.

Father God, these are hard, but important lessons for us, as they were for the children of Israel. You set a choice before them: life or death. You set the same choice before us. And as difficult as the consequences may be sometimes, it is our choice that determines our outcome. Help us, Father, to choose life, and to follow your word, not turning to the left or the right, but staying on the path you have set before us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
