Today on Meditating the Word, Ziba brings supplies to David and his followers, Shimei curses David, Ahithophel and Hushai give conflicting advice to Absalom, Absalom is killed in the forest, and David mourns his son.

Father God, the mercy of David... we saw it with Saul, who was David's enemy, yet David still treated him with respect and wouldn't strike him. And we see it with his son Absalom, who conspired against his father to take the throne of Israel. Yet, we know that the love David showed pales in comparison to your love for us. We rebelled against you. We try to take your throne and be the lord of our own lives. Yet, you love us still. Enough to send Jesus to die for us so that we can live. Thank you, Father, for loving us.  Amen

Father God, it's sometimes painful to see the consequences of our decisions. As we read the account of David and his sons, we see the prophecies being fulfilled because of David's great sin with Bathsheba and Uriah the Hittite. Give us wisdom and discernment, Father, to follow your paths, rather than relying on our own desires. Thank you for your mercy. And thank you for the lessons in scripture to help us make right choices. May we make choices that are pleasing to you and bring you glory. In Jesus' name we pray.  Amen

Father God, David was a man after your own heart, but he was a man, as imperfect in the flesh as anyone else. Instead of fulfilling his call and going to battle, he chose to stay behind and that started a downward spiral into sin with such a high price. He placed himself outside of your will, Father, which is a dangerous place to be. Then he taught us a lesson about rising up and carrying on instead of wallowing in pity over his failure. May we have the same courage to pick ourselves up and move forward when we fail, and the wisdom to stay in your will. We pray in Jesus' name.  Amen

Father God, We identify with the despair of David's psalms. Sometimes it seems as though we are alone. But we know that you are always with us. You comfort us. You love us even when we are unlovable. You hear us even in our despair. And if quiet ourselves and listen, we hear your sweet words of love and encouragement. Your love, your strength, your ability fills us to overflowing, and we rest in the indescrible peace so deep, so wonderful, we can't even understand it. Thank you, Father, for loving us. Amen

Father God, in the account of Mephibosheth, we see not only David's love for Jonathan in keeping his covenant, but we see a foreshadow of Jesus keeping your covenant with Abraham. He rescued us from our Lo DeBar, a place of no pasture, and set us at your table where we eat continually as a child of the King. Thank you, Father, for your faithfulness to your covenant. Thank you for adopting us into your family. Amen
