Day 172: 1st Kings 10-11 and 2nd Chronicles 9
Wednesday Jun 21, 2023
Wednesday Jun 21, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, the Queen of Sheba visits Solomon, Solomon sins against God, adversaries arise against Solomon, Jereboam's reign is prophesided, and the death of Solomon.
This is Day 172. Today we are reading 1st Kings 10 and 11 and 2nd Chronicles 9
----
Father God, for all of his wisdom, Solomon still made a terrible mistake. He took foreign wives, and followed after their gods. It's hard to understand. Even Molech, the god the children were sacrificed to. We realize through Solomon, there are different kinds of wisdom. There is earthly wisdom, and there is godly wisdom. Help us to follow after Your truth and Your wisdom, Father, and to not go astray. May our last days bring you even more glory than our present. Amen

Day 171: Ecclesiastes 7-12
Tuesday Jun 20, 2023
Tuesday Jun 20, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, Solomon compares Wisdom and Folly, and discusses the inequities of life, obedience to rulers, accepting life as it comes, observations of wisdom, the value of diligence, youth and old age and advice to the young.
This is Day 171. Today we will finish reading the book of Ecclesiastes.
----
Father God, it all boils down to walking in Your Word, in Your truth. Nothing we can accomplish on this earth is worth a thing, unless it is according to Your purpose. But You have given us life to live and to enjoy, to worship and to serve You, and to do good. Obeying You is our whole duty. Help us fulfill this duty with joy and grace. Amen

Day 170: Ecclesiastes 1-6
Monday Jun 19, 2023
Monday Jun 19, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, Solomon discusses the vanity in everything, in seeking wisdom, in self-indulgence, in folly and toil; he talks about the seasons of everything in life, our God-given tasks and the value of friendship and compares wisdom and folly. This is Day 170. Today we are reading Ecclesiastes 1-6
----
Father God, such a lesson in matters of the heart, and in our motives. Working for the sake of working, or to build and hoard wealth, is meaningless. We can't take anything that we earn with us when we leave this earth. And so many of us spend our days and the years of our lives toiling for nothing. You gave us work and a purpose. And that work and purpose should fill us with joy. Yes, there should also be a reward for the work that we do here on earth, but far more important, is the treasure we store up for ourselves in heaven. Help us to keep our focus, Father, on the things that truly matter. Amen

Day 168: Proverbs 25 and 26
Saturday Jun 17, 2023
Saturday Jun 17, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, we continue with lessons of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs.
This is Day 168. Today we are reading Proverbs 25-26
----
Father God, So many simple lessons of wisdom are in the Book of Proverbs. Many of them seem common sense, but common sense often seems to be rare. My key take away from today's scriptures are to not be lazy. Your word tells us that the man who doesn't work doesn't eat. Also, to practice moderation. So often we indulge ourselves when we should be content with what satisfies and stop. And again, we see how important our words are. They can put out a fire, or make it rage out of control. Help us to be disciplined, Father, when it comes to work, enjoying good things, and in the words we speak. Amen

Day 167: 1st Kings 9 and 2nd Chronicles 8
Friday Jun 16, 2023
Friday Jun 16, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, the Lord appears to Solomon a second time, Solomon builds other cities, and Solomon moves his wife into the house he built for her.
This is Day 167. Today we are reading 1st Kings 9 and 2nd Chronicles 8
----
Father God, it's interesting that Solomon wouldn't allow his wife, the daughter of Pharoah, to live in the presence of the Ark of the Covenant because it was holy. He built her a house away from David's house and from the temple. It makes me realize what a mistake it is to try to compartmentalize our lives into spiritual and secular categories. We aren't called to be Christian on certain days, or at certain times, or in certain places, but every place and all the time. Help us, Father, to recognize when we try to make allowances for the things of this world and to instead live our lives wholly dedicated to you. Amen

Today on Meditating the Word, we pray a Psalm of Ascents, and the final songs and Psalms.
This is Day 166. Today we are reading Psalms 134, and 146-150
----
Father God, we give you praise. We sing praises to you. And we praise you with dancing. Who are we, yet, you take pleasure in us. You have lifted us up, not because we deserve it, but because of your mercy and lovingkindness. We will praise you as long as we live, and then for all eternity. Amen

Wednesday Jun 14, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, Solomon offers a prayer of dedication, the temple is dedicated, the Lord appears to Solomon and we pray Psalm 136.
This is Day 165. Today we are reading 2 Chronicles 6 & 7 and Psalm 136
----
Father God, your lovingkindness does endure forever, and we give thanks to you, Father. Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, the Ark is brought to the temple, Solomon prays a prayer of dedication, and the temple is dedicated.
This is Day 164. Today we are reading 1st Kings 8 and 2 Chronicles 5
----
Father God, we try to imagine the sound of 120 trumpets and hundreds of singers praising you... and our imagination falls short. We try to imagine your glory entering the temple, so heavy that the priests couldn't stand before you and minister to you.. and we can't envision it. And we are amazed that you have now chosen to dwell within us, vessels of clay. We are humbled and in awe of you Father. Thank you for loving us that much. Amen

This is Day 162. Today we are reading 1st Kings 7 and 2 Chronicles 4
----
Father God, we thank you for your Word. We thank you for the record of the building of your temple, the care and craftsmanship that went into it, the abundance of gold and fine things. And we are reminded, Father, to not skimp on what we give you. When we give you offerings -- either of finances or of worshp -- we are to give you the very best, not withholding anything from you, because you are the source of all that we are and all that we have. Thank you, Father, for your abundant grace and blessings. Amen

Sunday Jun 11, 2023
Sunday Jun 11, 2023
Today on Meditating the Word, Preparations are made for building the temple, Hiram agrees to help Solomon, a census is taken of the foreigners, and Solomon builds the temple.
This is Day 162. Today we are reading 1st Kings 5 & 6 and 2 Chronicles 2 & 3
----
Father God, we are struck by the fact that the temple wasn't just built by those under your covenant, but by non-covenant workers as well. Men who served other gods, but whose king recognized you as the Creator of heaven and earth and shared friendship with both David and Solomon. We also see the reverence for your house. All of the stonework was done at the quarries, so that no hammer or chisel was heard in your house. May we learn to work with others, even if they do not share our faith and may we show you and your house the same honor and reverence today. Amen
