Day 223: Jeremiah 14-17

Today on Meditating the Word, Jeremiah prophesies drought, famine and sword, the day of disaster, and the importance of keeping the Sabbath holy.

Father God, You gave us a day of rest, You declared it holy. Yet even today -- especially today -- Your people do not rest. We work ourselves to exhaustion for the things of this earth... temporary things that will not last... instead of entering into Your presence and finding rest and restoration for our souls. There is a blessing on those who trust not in the work of their own hands, but in You; those who put their confidence in You. Like a tree planted by the waters, spreading out its roots. Father, we won't fear when trouble comes, famine or recession. Your promise is that we won't cease yielding fruit. Just like Isaac, we will reap an abundant harvest in times of famine -- even 100 fold. Thank You, Father, for Your favor and blessing on our lives when we rest in You. Amen

Father God, when Jonah prophesied against Nineveh, they listened, and they repented and turned to You. And You had mercy on them. But years later, they had turned back to their old ways once again. So You sent another prophet, Nahum. But they didn't listen. We see that You send messengers to try to turn people away from disaster. Open our ears, Father, to hear the messages You send us today -- through Your Word, through Holy Spirit, through those around us. Help us to listen, to hear, and to obey. Amen

Father God, over and over again, we see your mercy when your people repent. And Father, we know repenting doesn't just mean confessing or admitting that we have sinned and missed the mark, but rather, it means a turning away from. So, Father, today we ask that you give us a new heart and renew our spirits within us so we don't continue in our sins, but truly repent and turn back to you in obedience. Thank You, Father. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen.
