Meditating The Word

Today on Meditating the Word: the Parables of the Sower, the Wheat and the Tares, the Mustard Seed and the Yeast, the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl, and the Net, a Prophet Without Honor; a Lamp on a Stand, Jesus' Mother and Brothers, Jesus Calms the Storm, Jesus Restores a Demon Possessed Man, the Woman with the Issue of Blood, and Jairus' Daughter Raised from the Dead.
This is Day 287. Today we are reading Matthew 13 and Luke 8----
Father God, we receive Your Word into our hearts -- hearts that have been plowed and prepared; good soil. We seek to understand Your Word, and guard it within our hearts so that it will grow and flourish. We nurture it and protect it, not allowing our minds to dwell on anything that disagrees with what Your Word says. We hear Your Word, and faith comes. And it is through faith that we receive the promises and everything that you have provided for us. When something comes against us, we don't allow fear to enter. We just rest on Your Word, knowing that if You spoke it, it is true. Amen

Father God, so many lessons from this passage from Luke... but two really stand out to me: persistence and the state of our heart. It isn't just to those who ask that it is given, or to those who knock that it is opened, or to those who seek that find... but to those who are persistent. So often, Father, we give up too soon. We make a half-hearted attempt instead of giving ourselves fully to the pursuit of answers and knowledge. Let us pursue You with the same determination with which You have pursued us. Help us to dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly, Father. Not just in our outward actions. We judge by what we see, but You judge by the unseen, by what is in our hearts, our souls and our minds. Help us to renew our minds with Your Word and transform our lives into something beautiful on the inside, not just what others can see. Amen

This is Day 285. Today we are reading Matthew 11----
Father God, we come to You when we are weary. We come to You when we are burdened by the cares of this world. And especially today, Father, there are many burdens and cares and strife and wars going on in the world. Surely, we must be in the end times, because we see celebrating in the streets over war and murder and destruction. But You have promised rest. So we throw our burdens at Your feet. We cast them down and we leave them there, taking up Your yoke, which is easy and light to bear. In You we find rest for our souls. Help us to remain in that rest, Father, no matter what is happening in the world around us. Amen

Father God, so many lessons from the life and ministry of Jesus... if we will only apply them. Salvation that is available even to the worst of us. We are the ones You came to save. And the importance of faith... You can't force salvation or healing or blessings on us. You have offered them freely, but we have to accept them by faith. And we must protect that faith, even if it means sending family and friends away when they doubt. You generously give us Your righteousness in exchange for our filthy rags, blessings in exchange for curses, eternal life in exchange for death. Thank You, Father.  Amen

Father God, We couldn't even keep the law of the Old Testament. And when Jesus came, He raised the bar. Where murder was wrong under the law, He tells us to not be angry. Where adultery was wrong under the law, He tells us to not even have lust in our heart. The law and the prophets were distilled down to two things: Love You with all of our heart, mind and soul, and love our neighbors as ourselves. But, not just the friendly neighbors -- even those who hate us. We can't do it in our own power, but with You all things are possible, and where we fail, Your grace steps in. Thank You for Your grace, Your mercy and Your forgiveness. Amen

Father God, help us to be doers of Your Word and not hearers only. We plant the seeds of Your Word deep without our hearts, laying a firm foundation for our lives. And though the storms still come, we are not shaken, but can withstand them because we are firmly rooted in Your Word. We fill our hearts with Your Word, and it is out of that abundance that we speak and from that foundation that the circumstances of our lives flow. We give generously, expecting nothing in return. We are merciful and give the gift of forgiveness, not condemnation, the gift that frees not only others, but also sets us free. Thank You, Father, for Your Word and the mighty power in it -- just as powerful and sure today as when Jesus spoke it thousands of years ago. Amen

Father God, what an amazing chapter from John! How we love Your Word and the ability to learn more about Jesus, his life and his teachings. Father, as Jesus showed us through the example of his life, may we also do Your work. And we can't do it on our own, in our own strength and abilities. We can only do it through the power of Holy Spirit within us. Help us, Father, to be about Your work, to do only what Jesus did, because he is the exact image of You. Thank You for eternal life. Thank You for Your living Word in us. Thank You for Your love that fills us to overflowing. We set our hope on Jesus, Your Word made flesh. Thank You, Father.  Amen

The same authority He used to cast out demons, to heal the sick, to calm the seas... is available in Him to operate through us. Not as we will, but as You will, Father. So guide us. Open our eyes to the opportunities You place before us to do Your will, to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the earth. In Christ we have been made new, we are new creations, and You have filled us with new wine -- Holy Spirit. May we be willing vessels. Flow through us Father, to establish Your kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. Amen

Father, help us to be more like the Samaritans and believe You at Your Word rather than seeking signs and miracles. You have spoken Your will and Your promises over us through Your Word. All You ask is that we believe that Your Word is true so that we can receive everything You have already provided, richly, abundantly for us. Amen

Father God, in reading about the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, we see that he faced the same temptation that we face today... A question of identity. If you are the son of God. The enemy attacks us by trying to make us doubt who we are in Christ. And You have given us the same weapons that Jesus used to defeat the enemy... Authority and Your Word. When the enemy came at Jesus, he responded with the Word. And he spoke with authority. Help us to do the same Father. Part of the purpose for reading Your Word is to equip ourselves with weapons, with Your Words, so that whenever we face an attack, or a doubt, or a fear, we can speak Your Word with Authority and quench every fiery dart of the wicked. Thank You, Father, that You have not left us defenseless. Thank You for Your Word. Amen
